I just started to work in new company, I noticed that all the computers have a DNS number in the tcp/ip configuration. If I take the DNS ip out I am not able to browse the network and not even able to get on the interenet. Why is that? I am a novice user trying to understand a bit more.

Thank you

You still would be able to browse the network and Internet, but not by using names like If you new the IP Address for (e.g. 192.168.22.21) then you could just type that in your web browser and off you would go. DNS is like a phone book. If I wanted to call John Doe but didn't know his number I would look it up in the phone book, John Doe 555-2525. A computer uses DNS for the same thing. User wants to connect to Yahoo.com, DNS says Yahoo.com is 24.56.187.1 and connects you to the web server. Same thing happens on your local network. You would like to logon to active directory, DNS says logon server is 10.0.1.1 and you connect...

if you are in an AD domain...DNS is REQUIRED and you will be fired immediately upon removing those DNS server addresses when everything goes to sh*t :)
