DNS http://foo.com gets www.foo.com HOW? 1

What kind of entry in DNS /Bind (Windows 2000 actually) makes the

http://www.foo.com

server answer when someone only asks for

http://foo.com?

Or is that a technology other than DNS making that happen? I have wondered this for years. ...............................

We have a PTR record pointing to our domain (ourdomainname.com) in the "xxx.xxx.xxx in-addr-arpa" zone.
That gets a response from browsers when the

http://www is

left off.

It could be that your IE is automatically adding the

http://www bit.

Check it in options.
