Error: Root hints list has invalid root hint server: m.root-servers.net. (202.12.27.33)

The primary DNS address is the same as the IP of the server.

Your DCDIAG output shows Error: Root hints list has invalid root hint server: j.root-servers.net. (198.41.0.10)

The IP address for the J root server is incorrect, i'm not sure if this will resolve your issue but it certainly looks wrong.

It was there as a secondary address, removed 198.41.0.10 and ran DCDiag again - same error ... beginging to wreck my head at this stage

What is the output now? The change might not take effect immediately it may require the DNS cache flushing.

I flush & re-registered before I ran DCDiag again

Result:

How long has you active directory being running for is this a recent issue?

Are you using forwarders to your ISP's DNS servers for name resolution?

Also going back to what brontosaurus said, is your servers IP the only one listed?

I cant answer your first question as I only arrived on this site to do a heath check.

No I am not using forwarders to ISP's

My servers also have an alternate IP address listed.

There are 6 DNS servers on the network, ran DCDiag on all 6 ... 3 are reporting no errors but the other 3 have the errors mentioned above. I removed the root hints from one of the DC's with the error and copied the root hints from a working DC's but no joy.

Really this document from MS needs following to ensure that you are configured correctly, the forwarders should be set to point to your ISP's dns servers and your primary and secondary DNS addresses on you servers should point to your own internal DNS servers.

Got this sorted, the problem was a corrupt dcdiag.exe ...

Thanks for you help Pork........
