Hi here's the scenario:

1. I have 1 server with 2 nics. 1 192.168.0.1 the other 192.168.1.1
2. The server is doing DHCP for clients that are connected to the 192.168.0.0 network. Other clients are using static IPs and are connected to 192.168.1.1 nic.
3. The server is not actually setup as DNS.
4. The clients are mostly win9x.
5. The clients that use dynamic IPs can ping the other side of the server. The server is configured as a router

The issues:

1. the clients that use static IPs cannot ping the other side of the server i.e the clients with dynamic IPs. Should I add extra configs in RRAS. Actually it is configured like this:
the 192.168.0.1 nic:
(a) Enable IP router manager
(b) Use following IP address 192.168.0.1 255.255.255.0

the 192.168.1.1 nic:
(a) Enable IP router manager
(b) Enable router discovery adver...
(c) Use following IP address 192.168.1.1 255.255.255.0

when I add new routing protocol and choose NAT, it tells me that ICS should be disabled. When this time I disable the ICS service in SERVICES. I can't ping 1 w2k PC found on the static side from the dynamic side but I can still ping the others.

Any advices??

Make sure you setup a default gateway on the clients that have static addresses. The gateway should be the ip address of the router server's interface they are connected to.

I have setup the gateway as you said but no difference.

I can't ping the server's nic or the clients on the dhcp side.

A route print and ipconfig /all on a client and the server may help here, any chance of posting one?

Hi there,

you mention NAT, are you doing NAT?

Cheers

I can't answer to this question,

The guy before me have setup the whole thing like this:

the 192.168.0.1 nic:
(a) Enable IP router manager
(b) Use following IP address 192.168.0.1 255.255.255.0

the 192.168.1.1 nic:
(a) Enable IP router manager
(b) Enable router discovery adver...
(c) Use following IP address 192.168.1.1 255.255.255.0

That's all that is configured in RRAS.

When you setup router on a server you will actually add another device, a virtual device that has its own IP, can your static side ping that side of the router? if not, can they ping the gateway? If not, can you ping any of the static clients from the server?

Hello Noip,

Open Routing and Remote Access console, open IP Routing and click on Network Address Translation (NAT). Will it list any interfaces? If yes, what are the properties of the interface and, which interface is it?

Any how, if the ping session is initiated from inside, it will work because the NAT device knows it was initiated from there. Anything from outside would normally not work, unless you specifically allow to.

Cheers
Knutern

Thanks all!

MSperrin, I think it is too much info to post here

jrwizzard,
"can your static side ping that side of the router?"
YES

"if not, can they ping the gateway?"
the side of the router u r refering to is the gateway!!

Knutern,

RRAS shows:
the 192.168.0.1 nic:
(a) Enable IP router manager
(b) Use following IP address 192.168.0.1 255.255.255.0

the 192.168.1.1 nic:
(a) Enable IP router manager
(b) Enable router discovery adver...
(c) Use following IP address 192.168.1.1 255.255.255.0

"unless you specifically allow to"
Pls tell me how to achieve this

By the way,

anyone has any idea about why I'm not able to ping only 1 box (the only win2k, all others are win9x) i.e. 192.168.1.100 when i disable ICS on the server from the dhcp side i.e 192.168.0.0 All other boxes are accessible i.e thru ping.

Thanks for your input

Have you tried and test a 98 machine using dhcp and see what happens? Just a thought.

1. Pls could someone guide me how can I make the routing work the other way?

in my case win2k is routing 192.168.0.0 network on 192.168.1.0
how can I configure it so that it route 192.168.1.0 network on 192.168.0.0?

2. Can you guide me guys thru simple steps to configure win2k as a WINS server?

Thanks for your valuable help!
