I have a single server as DC for a child domain. When I open the DNS Snap-in the entire console is empty. I've tried reinstalling the Admin. tools from the Admin pack to no avail. My goal is to demote the server & remove the trust for the child domain, but DCPROMO will not work b/c it cannot contact the parent domain. However, I can ping (via IP and domain name)and log into the parent domain's DC from this server.
Event viewer for DNS is empty. The directory service log file lists an event ID 1126, "cannot connect to Global catalog".

Any advice appreciated!

Is the DNS service running?

hmmm, it almost sounds like you haven't installed the "networking" components for the server via control panel???

make sure your networking components are installed and then check by connecting to the internet, then run then install DNS then run dcpromo, or you can run dcpromo and it will prompt you to configure dns.
