Hey all, newbie to this forum.

Just a quick (and hopefully easy) question. I'm searched somewhat and can't for the life of me find anywhere the basic commands you pass to a DNS service. For example with an SMTP service you could do something like:
HELO blah
MAIL FROM: bob@home.com
RCPT TO: geoff@away.com
DATA
Subject: Testing

heya just testing.
.
QUIT

and with HTTP you could do something like:
GET /index.html HTTP/1.1

but for the life of me I can't find the equivalent for DNS querying. Also, am I correct in guessing DNS queries are made on port 53?

Yes, DNS uses UDP 53 (mainly) for DNS queries.
