DNS can't run on a root server?

Here's the deal:

We have two main high speed DNS servers that all other machines will use to resolve names. When a name is not found we would like to forward the request to our leased line's DNS servers but it seems that you can't do that on a root server. Our primary DNS server is also our primary root server (PDC if you will) for our network. How would one go around this problem or do your DNS servers need to be just plain servers doing nothing else but DNS?

We are running W2K server exclusively. Thanks for the help.

Are you passing requests to other internet hosts, or other machines in other offices over private leased lines? If internet hosts, enter DNS forwarder addresses. Go to properties of DNS servers in DNS MMC under forwarders tab and enter ISP's DNS server addresses. This will resolve hosts outside of your network (Internet Hosts).

simply delete the . root zone on your Win2K server's DNS (because it is your first server, Win2K assumes that it is the root server...)
After deleting the . root zone, reboot your server and you will be able to set the forwards...

good luck ---------------------------------------------------------------------
I have not failed, I've just found 10,000 ways that don't work
