HI,

I have a member server at a second site that at the moment is just a file server.

The DNS (active dir integrated) and active Dir server is at site 1.

I would like to install active directory (for local authentication) and DNS at the second site. To help with bandwidth ( the sites are linked through a VPN)

Does running DCPROMO on the member server at site 2 automatically install dns or do i need to do this manually after running DCPROMO. If i do need to do this manually what is the best way before or after running DCPROMO – our DNS is active directory integrated

Many Thanks

DCPROMO can install the DNS service for you. Just make sure it can access the DNS server at Site 1. Or if you feel better install the Network Services like DNS before DCPROMO. It is personal choice.

Hi

Thanks for the reply,

server 2 can defiantly see the DNS server at site one and this is set as server 2's primary dns server, and I get good DNS resolution on the member server.

I’ll install through DCPROMO (I assume I get a option screen to allow for DNS installation)

Many Thanks

Installation of DNS on additional domain controllers is not automatic through dcpromo. You will need to add it via add/remove windows components.

Once you have added DNS to your new domain controller, and assuming DNS is AD integrated, then it will replicate to your new DC.

Install Active Directory on the Second Domain Controller

If there are no stupid questions, then what kind of questions do stupid people ask? Do they get smart just in time to ask questions?

Kind of mixed my initial DC with additional DC info here. Sorry about that -people3-
