I have a server that is going to be our new print server.
The server is named "server1.sys.school.edu"
The server has an alias "server.school.edu"
This is what comes up when I do an nslookup :
C:\Documents and Settings\sdkay>nslookup server.school.edu
Server: ns3.school.edu
Address: xxx.xxx.8.2
Name: server1.sys.school.edu
Address: xxx.xxx.8.74
Aliases: server.school.edu
I want the name "server.school.edu" to be an alias of the machine name so that if there is a problem with the system I can just switch the alias over to our other machine server2.sys.oakland.edu and restart print services.
However with the current name and alias...in windows when I go to START - > RUN and type in \\server or \\server\printer
I get this error:
_______________________________________
\\server
You were not connected because a duplicate name exists on the network. Go to System in Control Panel to change the computer name and try again.

I can connect to the print queues if I go \\xxx.xxx.8.24
or \\server1.sys.school.edu or \\server1
I have looked at the network settings and it is only setup to use the IP for server1.sys.school.edu
