DNS - AD integrated, Primary, Secondary

I have a questions about DNS.
Why would someone have an AD integrated zone and have a primary / secondary also? Is AD integrated only possible on a DC?

If I wanted to keep an DNS zone sepparate would Primary / Secondary be my best bet?
