DNS/2003 zone xfer to secondary fails

I have 2 DNS servers. They are NT2003 R2 SP2 and are DCs in the same domain.

I have 2 AD integrated forward lookup zones which work properly.

These servers are secondary servers to another zone for a trusted NT2000 domain.

I have another zone (IE contoso.com) defined as a primary non AD zone on one of the servers. The other server is set as a secondary. This works fine and the secondary loads the zone without a problem.

I then added another non AD integrated zone (IE contoso2.com). Setup exactly as contoso.com is set up.

contoso2.com will not transfer to the secondary server. In the DNS MMC I see:
The DNS server encountered a problem while attempting to load the zone. The transfer of zone data from the master server failed.

Primary settings are:
Primary, running, no dynamic updates, both DCs are on the name servers tab and zone transfers are allowed to any server.
Secondary:
Secondary with the same zone file name and the IP address matches the primary server.

Can anyone hypothesize as to why this isn't working? I have another zone set up identically that does work and can't figure out why this one doesn't. Maybe a limit to the number of primary non AD integrated zones?

Wow, this is weird.

On the primary - remove the CNAME record. Delete zone on all secondarys. Readd zone on secondarys. Zone replicates.
Add CNAME back on primary. Zone replicates to all secondarys.

The CNAME refers to another server in another domain (ourcompanymfg.com). Apparently Windows DNS has a problem with this. Problem has been reproduced under NT2000 also.
