DMZ with a pix 501

it is possible to designate one of the LAN ports as a DMZ port on the 501 -- I don't think so but wanted to check in with this group.

Nope! You need a 515 or higher model for a DMZ.

What you have in a 501 is a switch.

You can have VLANs on the outside or inside interfaces if you are running code 6.3.X. However you cannot configure VLANS on the switch ports.
