dmoz.org why so important 2

Why do I keep coming across info saying how important it is to be in dmoz.org, I've been there and thier site doesn't work for you to suggest a URL so how can it be so important, when it doesn't even work?

I spoke with a friend and he says it's been like this for days, so it's hardly a little 'down time' due to hosting issues, especialy as the site itself is still up, so what gives?

They had a serious hardware failure last week - see

- they're still working on fixing it. The pages you see in the directory are static pages from a backup, anything that requires scripting is dead.

Why is DMOZ important? It's the source of the Google Directory, though they only update their copy every now and again. It's also available for anybody to download and put on their site - so a single link in DMOZ will become a host of links from all the sites which use DMOZ data. That said, I suspect that SEs downplay the importance of links from dmoz clone directories.

man this SEO thing is like opening a can of worms and I don't like fishing!

a wealth of information on the do's and don'ts , the good , the bad and ugly.

well I guess all I can do is soldier on and do my best, rome wasn't built in a day , and i guess neither can a good search engine ranking.

any suggestions to alternative directories worth submitting a link to as dmoz has been down for over a month now!
