DMA test utility?

I've got a Dell Laptop that's giving odd problems.

I'm certain that there's a problem with the DMA controller with respect to writing to disks.

Is there a utility of some sort that will test DMA writes against PIO writes, using different DMA modes?

The mfr. of the controller may have some testing utility to do it...
what kind is it?

The machine is a Dell Inspiron 8100 laptop.

I've problems getting both Windows 2000 and Windows XP to install successfully.

Dell supply some diagnostics, but they don't reveal any problems. I doubt that they run in DMA mode, though.
