Compaq DLT TAPE IV says it can backup 40/80 GB, our tape drive is 35/70; still have problem backup up data up to 45GB. The server is netware 5.1, Arcserve has compression ON. Any idea?

Hi Miscohill

First of all the most you will get onto a DLTIV tape is 70Gb because you are using a DLT35/70 Drive. You can get 80gb but only if the tape is used in a DLT40/80 tape drive. As for compression then it is working due to the fact that you are getting 45gb onto one tape.If your drive was not compressing then you would only get 35gb onto a tape.As the drive that you are using is 35gb native and 70gb compressed. What you can do is run a LTT diagnostics to see if the drive is working fine. You can get the diagnostics here
Also problem might be with the files that you are backing up.Some files such as zipped jpgs etc are already precompressed and cannot be compress any more.If the majority of the files that you are backing up are precompressed then it is likely that you will not get the maximum amount onto 1 tape.To find out more about compression see here

Hope this helps
Shaun
