DLT Tape Drive always needs cleaning

Server is IBM Netfinity 5000 with IBM DLT8000 tape backup.
All too frequently (just about daily) light comes on tape drive requesting to "Clean Tape Drive".
Steps taken so far:
Cleaned Tape Drive with several DLT Tape Drive Cleaning tapes;
Downloaded and installed latest Firmware for Drive;
Tried new recording Tapes;
Formated Tape Media;
Re-installed Tape Drivers.
Tape Drive appears to work fine other than the Clean Tape Drive Light.I am running out of things to try...any ideas?
