We were under the impression that an 8000 engine (HP Surestore 818) would be able to read tapes made on a VS80 type but they come up as Unrecognized Media after an inventory. We have some important data on these tapes. Any suggestions? Thanks.

There is not just the tape device that is important, but also the software.

I'm not sure what a VS80 is, but if they are both SureStore's, you should be able to load the tape and if the tape was recorded with Arcserve, you'll be able to read it too.

For the type of hardware, you will need to confirm with HP that they are backward compatible.

VS80 is Benchmark technology and DLT8000 is Quantum technology. Even though both use DLT4 tapes and originated from the same specs, DLT80000 can NOT read Benchamrk tapes and Benchmark can NOT read DLT8000 tapes.
Once a DLTIV has been formated one way, it cannot even be erased by the other one
cheers
TP
