dlt autoloader problem

I've got a dlt 9 tape autoloader. I can backup to multiple tapes, but I can only restore from tape 1. I think this is because the index is on tape 1. I would like to be able to move tapes to and from the drive and backup to individual tapes ( like mt -f /dev/rmt/X ranload N on some dds autoloaders) but it seems I have to have Veritas Net backup. Does anyone know of an alternative - I've found amanda, but I would prefer something supported by Sun.
