DLT 8000, problem reading tapes

Using an HP surestore DLT 80 with Imation DLT IV tapes and a quantum 8000 driver. After installing tapes in the drive I have recently started getting the message
"Tape device reported an error on a request to read data from tape. Error reported timeout before function completed"

This is accompanied by the 'tape in use', 'use cleaning tape', '40.0' and 'compress' lights lit.

If I try a DLT IV tape written on a 7000DLT then the unit works fine (no cleaning light) - both reading and writing.

verify the compatibility of the tape with the drive. DLT tapes written to by an earlier or older version of DLT drive sometimes causes this issue.

Try to format the tape, I have the same setup and have had this issue with NT Backup..
