My Dlink 802.11g wireless pci is a pain in the ass. Drivers are all updated. Not using windows zero config. Plenty of signal strength. Removed the hotfix. 500 watt power supply. Windows XP? Let me bring you up to speed. This thing will not stay connected if I'm not using the connection. It seems impossible, after hours of troubleshooting, that I could be missing an idle setting or something but I'm am running out of options. If someone could please give me some insite on the matter it would be nice. I don't think that this is a d-link specific problem, from what I've read it might be happening to alot of people running windows xp. Thanks alot for your help...this forum is sweet. JOE

What is the AP or wireless router?

This sounds like an interference problem. The core issue is that your PCI adapter has its antenna blocked by the computer case itself, and a narrow range of movement to improve reception. While your strength is good, you say little of the signal quality. I suspect a great deal of multipath interfernce is at play.

You could search on the internet for 802.11 antennas. You should be able to find an external antenna, say 5 DBi, that you could place on your desk.

The first thing I would do, however, is to change the channel used. Set the AP/router to channel 1, and the same with the card. Try channel 11 if the problem repeats.

And, disable 802.1x authentication if you have the option.

Got any 2.4Ghz phones? They use the same frequency as 802.11g, or so I've heard... Try unplugging the phone if you have one and see if it helps at all.
