I have a a win 2K pc connected to the internet via a westell modem provided by verizon. Everything works fine until, i tried to install the dlink 514 router.

I first un-installed all of the verizon software (as suggested by dlink). Then went through the steps of configuring the router

I can connect to the internet but the DNS does not seem to work.
i.e i can go to websites using the ip address but not the dns name. The router is able to get an ip address from verizon and is also able to get the ip for the dns server. The PC is assigned a private ip by the dlink router

Dlink advised to re-install tcp/ip on my SMC NIC. I dont think that is the problem.

Any suggestions ?

Thanks
Vic

I agree with you. DNS should be housed solely on the router and not be affected by the TCP/IP stack in Windows.

Westel modems are tricky. If I'm not mistaken, they have built-in firewall settings that can interfere with LAN functions. Have you contacted Verizon about this yet? That would be the next step - trying to get the modem to just act like a modem and nothing else.

The verizon supplied modem is a bridge modem, the only addition is a PPoE shim, although they are now providing software and asking that the firmware be updated to remove the shim.

I would go to the Westell modem Forum at this site, there is a discussion of the Verizon supplied modem that you will find usefull:
Head to the same site to their D-Link Forum, and do a site search on your router. This Forum has D-link tech support assigned to monitor the discussions:
As you have removed your PPoE stack, I think the first thing I would do is to run a repair tool on your Winsock service stack. If the internal tables used to establish your routing entries are corrupt it can lead to the issues you are facing:

What IP address does the DLink give to your PC for DNS? I had this problem and the DLink was giving its own address. Sometimes it would work, sometimes not. There should be a fix, but I just statically configured the PC IP.
