Short story....
My COMPAQ 5120 went into SAFE MODE about 2 months ago, for some unknown reason, and has been basically unusable, except for SOLITAIRE! Can't play CD-ROMs, etc.
Today I decided to try and figure out what's wrong. I went through the HELP file, and did a system-by-system confirmation, and added many basics back on to the START UP MENU, that for some reason were UNchecked. The only thing that was showing up on the task bar was the SYSTEM TRAY. That seemed to help a LOT, however, when I went through the DIAGNOSTICS, it came up with an error in the DiagnosticLibrary: DL_VIDEO.DLL and said to check the version of DL and make to be sure it's correct.
Along with this, I cannot get the DISPLAY to change the number of colors from 16 to anything higher, like 256 or High-Bit 16. It will let me click on a different setting, but when I click on OK for it to restart my computer so the new settings will be in place, it resets it to 16 colors. Therefore, when I go to use a CD-ROM program, it won't operate.
I am not real saavy here folks, so I don't know what other info I might offer you to assist in making a determination of the problem, but I'm willing to try and find any info that you might feel would help in diagnosing this problem.
Any and all help would be most appreciated!
Thanks!
