Hi- I inherited a rack of DL380 G3's, running RedHat 2.9. I need to reinstall RedHat Enterprise Linux 5.3.

The system will not see the RHEL dvd if it is put in the dvd and tried to boot. I found SmartStart 8.15 dvd's, one for x86 32 bit and one for x86 64bit. The 64 bit cd will boot, but not allow me to go to the installation portion of the menu. The 32 bit cd will boot and allow me to go to the installation menu, but the only options are Win2003 or 2008.

I downloaded SmartStart 8.5 for Linux x64 and x86, neither version will boot successfully, they state they have a kernel for an x64 system and I have an i686 CPU.

Any suggestions on how to proceed?

Thanks
Dom

A lot of historic HP software is here:-

ftp://ftp.hp.com/pub/softlib2/software1/cd

unfortunately the directory structure is not user friendly (just numbers)

Also if you browse to

ftp://ftp.hp.com/pub/softlib2/software1

you will find old firmware versions.

If it doesn't leak oil it must be empty!!

Thanks- I'm pulling down the old versions and will give them a try!

I've tried v8.3 smart start (fails to boot), v8.20 and v8.25 (boots, but only allows deployment of win2003 or 2008).
I also tried to use a dvd of RedHat Enterprise Linux 5.3 i386 version, which the system fails to acknowledge (same dvd is bootable in another system).

Any other advice?

Just a thought. Is the optical drive in the server a DVD drive?

I believe the SmartStart disk is a CD-sized image. Above you say the disks you're using are both DVD and CD, so I thought it was worth a check.

Indeed, final answer was to burn the cd set. One of the units had a dvd, the rest were cd's...

Glad to hear you got it working.
