I've just installed ESX 3.01 on a DL320 G2 and the fans are running at full speed all the time. Is there any way of turning the fans down or setting them to temp based. There is a software update on HP for red hat EL v3 will this work for ESX as it runs it's own vmlinux?

The fans will run depending on the temperature of the server. You'll need to check with HP to see if they have an update available.

This is usually caused by the BIOS version being out iof date. To add to what MrDenny said, check the link below to get the latest firmware CD. Also check to make sure the server is not genuinly overheating which will obviously cause the server to ramp up the fans:

just to check the server I installed server 2k3 and once I'd run the smartstart the fans kicked down to almost silent. I can't find anyway of installing the smartstart for ESX, doesn't seem to be supported (on any platform)

nope tried that already can't autorun or manually install the smartstart.

Do you know which driver or firmware controls the fan speed?

So you have downloaded the Proliant Support Pack for Red Hat Enterprise Linux 3, run it on your ESX server, and it doesn't work? What errors are you getting?

The support pack worked ok and the fans are now quiet.

Thanks
