Div order changing

Could someone please tell me what is causing this page to mafunction?

On a mac in safari the content seams to jump out of the enclosing div and on a PC it seams to ignore the with constraints.

Sorry about the length of the post but I am complete loss of what may be casing this. I have included the orginal document and the two attached stylesheets.

Any help would be very much appreciated.

I asume you are referring to #container when you say "the enclosing div". I can't really test it here (and don't have Safari on hand until this evening) but you could try setting the position to be relative...

Just some more info. I am also having problems in IE version 6.0.2 on the PC. The Div that holds the resuts when a search is carried out always expands to full width. Any ideas.

Well, I've visited the site in FF1.06 and it appears fine. In IE5.5 the box containing all the form elements drops to the point below the disclaimer button. And of course the results appearing full width.

I'm going to have to look closer at it this evening I think... but you could look into margin vs padding problems (IE works differently to the other browsers and this may be adding extra width to your box with the form elements in it... causing it to be wider than the space allocated... and flipping down the page).

Oh. I just validated your page against the w3c and got: Failed validation, 2330 errors . How about you make sure you have valid markup -- since that could very well be the cause of all this hassle!

Thank you for your help. After much staring at a screen load of code I noticed on of the </div> tags had a missing > this was a difficult error to notice as this tag was created dynamically by our asp code.

I will look into the validation issuses you mentioned.

Well... I tend to use the validation service to try and spot just the error you found. Of course it spots lots of other things too... but if the document passes validation then it means the markup is sytactically correct (of course it also implies semantic(sp?) correctness).

Not really - it can tell that your <blockquote> element is properly marked up (i.e. syntactically correct) but it can't tell whether it's really a block quotation, or whether you're just using it to indent a paragraph.

Still, people who validate their sites tend to be people who care about semantics too, in my experience.
