Hi All;

We are making a site and are have been having trouble with divs so much so that we have reverted to using tables. The problem is, we really need one div contained within our gallery section. This is responsible for holding the thumbnails that a user can scroll through.

If it is not in a div, then the scrolling button features will not work. Unfortunately everything I have tried doesn't seem to work. I am a developer rather than a designer so I have min experience regarding browser compatibility issues in terms of design.

A part of the site has been uploaded so that you can all see it first hand. Here is the URL:
I would appreciate any and all help in this matter!

Sorry, I forgot to say the problem: The div doesn't display at all in the Mac IE browser.

Thanks again!

Sorry Dan;

Please excuse me for sounding like an utter newbie, but we all have to begin somewhere. :) What do you mean by HTML and CSS validation errors?

Thanks again.

Hi Dan;

Yeah, sorry I didn't back to you all on this one. After much blood sweat and tears I eventually got it all working in a browser compatible fashion. The problem lied in the css styles attached to the various divs throughout the page.

It was tough, but I learnt alot in the process. Thanks for the pointer towards the w3c tools. From now on I am using those tools from the beginning. I have also decided to design for Firefox, and then test in IE afterwards. I decided this because after much reading I have found that FireFox implements the w3c standards regarding XHTML the best.

Thanks for your interest in this matter.

Cheers;

Sean, if you haven't done so already, install the Web Developers' Toolbar extension for Firefox. It gives you all sorts of useful things like easy access to various validators and a facility to click on an element and display the CSS rules applied to it (whaich sounds like it would have help with your original problem). Wow, fantastic plugin! Awesome! Thank you for the tip.

All these great tips are making me make better and better web sites.

I must also say that after plenty of research FireFox, in my books, is by far the best browser out there! I will be doing my part now to push it. The only reason sites don't show well in FireFox is because of bad web design, not because of FireFox. Internet Explorer is less strict, so it shows badly designed sites fine (making people think it is the superior browser). However, all this is doing is making people continue to design bad sites. A clever ploy against FireFox? :)

Cheers;
