dithering and band sizing

How can I reduce the banding effects that show up on the web when I use gradient or lighting effects on a graphic?
(I use photoshop and am fairly new to illustrator) So if you know the solution using either programs. I'd greatly appreciate

In PS theirs a small check button
in the options window Its called
dither this help reduce the banding
also filter blur helps too. I don’t know
about how it would look on the web

There is also a pixel preview in the view menu that shows a pretty accurate representation of what your art will look like on the web
