Hi

I was recently told that in order for a Distribution Point to use BITS, the server needs to have IIS installed on it. Can anyone confirm this, I've read a few articles but they weren't very clear on the subject.

We have Distribution Points setup at our remote sites, however as we only have one server at each site, the DPs are setup along side Lotus Notes, obviously IIS cannot be installed on this machine as two web servers on a single machine isn't clever.

Can anyone clear this up for me?

Installing IIS doesn't make a machine a web server. IIS is required for a web server, but doesn't make it.

BITS (Background Intelligent Transfer Service) is ONE component of the IIS (Internet Information Services) Component Set.

Put your Windows Server CD in > Start > Control Panel > Add or Remove Programs > on the left Add/Remove Windows Components > Expand IIS > check BITS > Click OK. Let Windows Components reinstall and refresh.

SMS NEEDS BITS IDEALLY. Installing IIS WONT MAKE YOUR MACHINE A WEBSERVER.

Hope this Helps.
