Distribution List does not work

I honestly don't know what this could be. I have a few distribution lists in my contacts. When I open them up they look fine, all the recipients are there. But when I try to send a new message to contact the name of the list appears next to To:, but it's not underlined and ?I get a message microsoft does not recognize "name of the list". They worked fine before. Besides the fact that outlook is truly evil, is there something else I might be missing?
