Dear Cognos Experts,
I have to install the production Env of C8 on 2 servers.
One will have the web server (Apache) and the DB (both data source and content store) is on a third machine.
Which is the best solution for splitting the 3 components (gateway, application server, content manager) of C8?
In which of the 3 components is the Dispatcher located?
How do I need to configure the different environments?
Many thanks

Gianni

The gateway is the part that's on the apache server.
The rest can reside on the application server.
The dispatcher part is the "application server" tier.

What do you mean with "how to configure the environments"?
You want me to copy/paste the 400 page manual in here?

Stefan

No Stefan,
I have the documentation...!
But what I cannot find into the docs is how to configure the two Cognos Configurations in order to let them see each other...
Another question, what about installing following config:

- Gateway, App Server in Box 1
- App Server, Content Manager in Box 2

Can I gain in performance and scalability with this configuration?

Many thanks

In cognos configuration environment just point the gateway URI on your application server to your webserver, and the rest to the local hostname.
Vice versa for the configuration on webserver.

I personally prefer a fuill install on both servers.
That way you have full redundancy and 2 servers to handle the load via the dispatchers at the same time. (load balancing)

there is a very good knowledge base document on the cognos website.. it tells you exactly which machine each URI must point to in simple multi-server install- good article for newbies.

search for:

URI mutli-server content manager gateway application tier SSL

and you will find it. (SSL is not talked about in the article, but i remember that it makes a point of stating that SSL is not discussed, hence i put it in hte search).

A question about this kind of config: if I have cubes as data sources, do I need to have a copy of them in each server?
Thanks

Best performance from a technical standpoint, is always with the cube locally on the server. So yes, that would mean 2 copies of them.
