Distributed DB suddenly says "Disk or Network Error"

Hi, hope someone can help.
I have a distributed DB in Access 97 (was a split database, and is now a shortcut - tried this to kill this error) across a local area network. Every now and again whilst a user has been entering data into the DB, Access will come up with a "Disk or Network" error. This can happen at any time, even when the DB has been left alone for a while. This means that the extensive report that the user was typing is lost! We have had network "sniffers" on this network and it appears to be working very cleanly. It looks like the Jet DB engine/something else is timing out.
Does anyone know of a fix/jetupdate/ANYTHING else that could possibly help me fix this?

I have the same thing happen to our Access 97 db, and was told through tek-tips that it happens when there is a break in the network connection. I believed it because our wiring is old. But perhaps it is something more...??

I currently have five access97 applications distributed on a LAN. I have only received that error when a network connection was lost.
