At work we are doing network management with HP OpenView in a distributed architecture. My question is this how do the collection stations know what Management stations to reports to?

rbelser,

>>>how do the collection stations know what Management stations to reports to?<<<

This is something that would need to be setup by you or an administrator in you work place. If your enviroment is already in existence, the you probably already have a permanent license that allows the ovrepld process to be registered with ovspmd. Once this is done there are a series of commands that you can run to set up the DA environment. on the management station:

xnmtopoconf -add -unmanage <collection station-name>
(alway add the collection station as unmanaged first so that you can test the functionality)
xnmtopoconf -test <collection station-name>
(this will test ping, and snmp and topology)
If this all passes, then.....
xnmtopoconf -manage <collection station-name>

If you are not the administrator of these servers you will not be able to execute these commands.....however, once this is done, a file is created on the collection station called remote managers ($OV_DB/remoteMgrs). This file tells you who your management is and who you will report topology status to.

Hope this answers your question and check out the NNM Guide to Scalability and Distribution. It tells you all about this.
