Distiller 5 crashing 1

I have Acrobat and Distiller 5.05 running on a Win XP Pro machine (fully patched). Saving as pdf via Word (for instance)hangs after a minute, so I tried printing via Distiller. Same thing. When I try to open Distiller it crashes when building the font table. I've tried the Dov Issacs hacks for only selecting Courier for fonts, and I've tried re-installing. Still no joy. Anyone else had this problem?

I had this same problem and was able to find a solution. For me, one of my fonts was corrupt and was causing the crash. What I did was move all but the windows core fonts to a temporary folder, then delete them from the main fonts folder. Then one by one I put them back until I got the crash again. When I got to the bad font, I went to the command-line prompt (for Windows XP click start, run and type cmd... this would be the same as the dos prompt for windows 98) and identified the font. For me, this font had 'read only' attributes so even tho I uninstalled the font Distiller was still scanning it. I removed the attributes and deleted the font manually. Voila! Distiller doesn't crash.

You were right, had a dodgy font causing the problem. Luckily it didn't take too long to find it as it began with B
