HI ppl!

how u been? its been quite a long time since i was here.

by the way i have a question for all you flash guys here. if u take a look at they have a module there that lets the user uploads an image for thier presentation and then they display the image (a jpg) in the flash while it is running! i thought this is not possible in flash. any ideas on how this is done? this would help a lot in a most of my flash projects....

bye and hope to hear from you soon!

thanks,

bignewbie

Can't get your link to run but it's probably done in Generator which allows you to dynamically create graphic content for display in the Flash player.

wangbar,

thanks for responding quickly! could u pls elaborate more about this. i intended to study generator for flash but didnt quite had the time for it. could u pls "enlighten" me more on this or could u give me a link to a tutorial on this.

hope to hear from you soon!

thanks,

Here's what I know, it isn't much I'm afraid...

Generator isn't a totally different thing to Flash it's more of an extension to it. The interface is pretty much the same etc. and it does everything that Flash can do.

The difference is that Generator allows for dynamic content to be loaded into a movie and can act on data to create things like charts and graphs. You can get Flash to do some of this with ActionScript and a bit of thought of course but Generator is designed to do this kind of thing much more easily.

Then there's price - Generator comes in three flavours and the most powerful (Enterprise edition I think) is well into the thousands (I'm in the UK so I'm talking pounds sterling, don't know where you are but whatever currency you use it certainly ain't cheap ;-) ).

To be honest all I've seen on Generator was at a Macromedia conference about a month ago and they just ran a quick demo, I'm sure someone on the forum is actually using it and could give you a better idea of it's capabilities...

That said, my next client wants a job done in Generator so I'll be learning more in a hurry!

thanks wangbar,

i got hold of a demo, i hope i can learn this thing asap. my boss wants a flash with interactive content in it. i checked out the price, very steep indeed. im wondering if my boss would let me buy it after i show him the demo.

thanks wangbar. The stars are ashinin' tonite!

ps
havent heard from ol' dave lately, i wonder where he is. Old, any ideas? i have something i asked of him.

Wangbar,
Adding a "d" to that link would have done it! ...builder!

Big,
Dave has often logged in in the past few days but lately rarely replies... Unless he's using another handle!
Maybe try him at

i just began using generator to turn jpegs into swf (offline) and the trial version puts those darn mm logos on everything. however... purports to have a free, open-source, java-based alternative to generator that does the same thing and outputs real flash swf files. i havent tried it yet, but as soon as i get at my girlfriend's computer (cable connection) i can download the 14Meg file and tell you if it works.

later

i didnt noticed that i typed it incorrectly, age may have begun to take its toll on me :-D. thanks for figuring it out Old. any ways, i was asking dave about the chat thing he got going in flash months ago and wondered if he could help me with one im trying to make now.

rube, i checked out the link you gave, and it made me wondered what's it for? Im very new to generator and am trying to get the hang of it. I hope you could give me insights to JGenerator soon. Guys sori if i have to post my generator questions here.

I found out that there aren't many ppl in tek-tips' generator forum and i kinda figured out that there are lots of capable ppl in this forum (tek-tips' flash forum), anyways generator is somewhat related to flash so i mihgt as well ask the ppl here.

thanks,
bignewbie

ps
old, have u used generator b4?

Nope!
But took note of Rube's link... Seems interesting! And it's free!
Cheers!

first, in case the link i gave didn't wark, hack off the "download.shtml" bit and follow the links.

Big, JGenerator does a limited number of the things that Generator does, such as loading jpeg images (or other data)from the server and inserting them into flash templates which you can then load into flash movies (as you probably know, you can not load a jpeg directly into flash). JGenerator uses almost exactly the same command syntax as generator, in the offline mode. Apparently, the guy who built JG is trying to expand its capability beyond that o generator, too.

Now, i'm not an expert in either product, as i only learned the aspects of them that i needed. There is information on the JG site, but the best place to get info is the macromedia site, because the two products are functionally similar.
