I have a PC running XP that has suddenly switched to a display that is too large. The display is basically four times as big as it should be, meaning that you get one quarter of the Windows desktop that's incredibly large.

Any ideas please?

Sounds like that you lost you video card driver or (if your monitor has a seperate one) a monitor driver.
Either way Windows is defaulting back to basic VGA settings.

Try re-installing drivers but if they won't install it could be that your graphics card has developed a fault.

Before re-installing your video card drivers, I suggest trying to fully remove the old drivers in case of a conflict.

Remove them from the Add / Remove programs list and then try some software such as DriverCleaner which is a freeware download and is very good for completely removing drivers.
