When I start up my computer for the first 20 minutes or so I have problems with Windows displaying stuff incorrectly. In Internet Explorer Images are messed up, colors wrong, fonts too big and across the file/edit/view/ect... bar instead of the cursor highlighting the "file" in a 3d way it highlights it blue. This also occurs in any other window such as my computer. Also I use the "view as webpage" option and the little corner that has the blue cloudy fade in it is not present after startup and the fonts are too big in the side panel where it says "My computer" or other folder name. After a certain amount of time everything goes back to correct operation. What is wrong and how can I fix it?

Hi turbo2.3!

I would try a new driver for the graphic card.
(I once had this problem with my old TNT-card!)
But you could also take a look at the card itself.
Perhaps it's a problem of the right contact?
Make sure it's plugged in the PCI- / AGP-port
correctly.

I'd like to hear further proposals!

Well. Ive installed the newest driver, reinstalled the old driver, let windows use the vga driver, and have now physically removed and reinstalled the card. No luck. What can i do now? Is there any other drivers I can use? Perhaps its a problem in windows?

Seems more a hardware problem on the video. Would be interested what happens if you used spray cooler on it, particularly the memory.
However , thermal shock might make it totally useless. Ed Fair

I would have to agree with edfair. It sounds more like a hardware probablem. Try even putting a known good video card in and giving that a shot. Don't know about the memory. I have heard that memory pins can corrode. maybe pull the memory out and put it back in. cleans the pins

I would also say that this is a heat problem.

Have you tried to replace the VGA card to see if the problem persists?

Check your CPU fan as well. I've seen the weirdest things happen if it is not working perfectly.

i hold the video card suppect try playing a game of freecell it's great in finding bad video card or get a video benchmark program and let it run if its the card it something will go wrong. if you try freecell you have to finsh the game.

its a tnt2 nvidia 32 mb card. All other programs work great. Its just the windows stuff for the first while the comp is started. I run 3 areana and tony hawk2 with no problems. ive even benchmarked it before. The only stuff it couldnt do was the real high end stuff i didnt expect it to do...

So its a windows problem or a driver conflict?

BTW, freecell works fine...

Have you looked into system information and checked for any hardware conflicts? What about any programs that you have in your start up folder since you say that problem happens when you first get into Windows it could be some program running at the start of windows that may be causing the video problem. These type of problems are hard to figure out sometimes because it could be anything, it doesn't even have to be related to the video card it could be some device that inadvertently is causing this problem or two devices. Thats my two cents, good luck let me know if this helps you out any!

there is a bunch of stuff running. But why does the problem go away after 15-20 minutes. I checked wintune at start up and then after the problem stopped, it said the same apps were running at both times.

How about into safe mode. Does same timeframe exist? Does same timeframe exist when you reboot? If it reboots OK then may be heat related.
Can you get another video card, even as a loaner. this has every symptom of heat related video card problem. One other possibility is to delete the card and shut down, let it cool overnight and see what it detects in the morning when it first powers up. And see if the time is significantly different under those conditions. Ed Fair

The computer was off for a month over xmas break. Yes the same thing occurs in safe mode. Why would it do this on start up if it was a heat problem? Its not logical. That is when the card would be cool. And the problem goes away after the computer has been on for a while (when it should be hotter). It must be a problem with windows/IE. It been a long time but I seem to remember this starting after i updated Media player and IE to 5.5, but possibly not I put a lot of programs on and off the computer last fall. Yet ive uninstalled them and reinstalled them a whole bunch of times and I cant figure out what it is.

Windows 98 uses IE 4 to display it "windows" correct? I think there is an error there. Because the problem occurs in places like "my computer" and other folders that i open after start up...

You get expansion with heat. And if you have a cracked trace or cold solder joint the movement from heat can complete the path. You haven't answered the question on whether it does the same time frame when you reboot.
Change the display from IE4 to windows to eliminate that possibility.
Sorry, logic no longer applies. This is now in the realm of SWAG. Ed Fair

Some monitors need to warm before they work properly I have read. But your case seems quite drastic.

Fonts displaying way too big I can't see how the monitor not warming up can be this problem.
