Does anybody know where the display name found on the start menu or %username%'s documents is found? I've been searching the registry and the user.dat files but haven't found anything yet that would remotely make sense to me..

any help on this one would be appreciated..

I know it may be easier to just make a new user but I'm trying to make a default profile and this display name is fowling things up for me..

Thanks

If I understand your question correctly you are asking about the User name... which is set in Control Panel / User Accounts. The Start menu displays the name of the current user.

Hope this helps

1. Right-click My Computer, and then click Manage.
2. Click Local Users and Groups to expand it.
3. Click Users.
4. Right-click the account that you want to change, and then click Rename.
5. At a command prompt, run the set command; the %HomePath% variable still points to the old user name.
NOTE: This does not change the name of the folder that appears under the Documents and Settings folder for the user."

Logon Name Does Not Match Name in Task Manager or Under Documents and Settings Folder

While you can change the username that appears on the Start Menu and Welcome screen under XP Pro, as linney notes above, the underlying name of the profile is not changed by this procedure.

Now you can work around this too, remember that this mismatch between displayed username and the underlying profile will not effect your creation of a default user profile. When you are done creating the (mismatched) user profile you want to use, copy it to the default user as per the instructions in:
When you create new users they will not be inconvenienced with the mismatch as there will not be a mismatch.
