I have an xp machine that when I use it in anger keeps flashing and refreshing the screen this is when i have about four items open , outlook, cmd x 2 , firefox. there are about 10 desktop icons that keep flashing when i move a window etc.

i also find that when telnet 'ing devices from this box the it takes ages to do a sh run and list configs it just scrolls really slowly for about 3 mins then gets faster.

i suspect that its linked to the graphics card but can't say for sure

Chip Type: intel(R) GMA 3000
DAV type : internal
Memory Size 256MB
Adapter String: intel(R) Q965/Q963 Express Chipset Family

Processor Intel(R) Pentium(R) Dual CPU
E2160 @ 1.80GHz
1.79GGz , 1.97GB of RAM

to be honest i consider this a reasonable spec but it peforms like a dog.

its running xp pro sp2

any ideas what i can check?

I would update the video driver first, but in my experience systems with XP and 256MB start to demonstrate this behavior. Toss a gig on ram in there and that should solve your problem.

it's got 1.97GB of RAM
with 256MB of Graphics card RAM

See what life is like from "Safe Mode with Networking". Try Normal Mode also, but with a different user.

Disable, not uninstall, any unused network adapters

Some general things to try.

See if System Restore will get you back to a restore point before your problem with Explorer.

Try running ChkDsk to check your drive for errors. Right-click your Drive icon/ Properties/ Tools/ Error Checking. Select both boxes.

Run the System File Checker program from the Run Box by typing.....Sfc /Scannow in it and have your XP CD handy.
