in WIN98 I've somehow disturbed the setting that controls how files are displayed when trying to open them in an application. I want them to display in alpha sequence by name, but can't seem to find where to make that change so it will affect applications. They all display in sequence by date modified.

I've tried setting it in windows explorer and my computer but the changes don't stay.

Try this

Click on the bar on top of the filenames in the explorer window. This sets it to alphabetical. Then go into tools/options or whatever is the Win98 equivalent. Set view all directories like current.

See if that works.
