Display colors will not change 1

Hi,
Running Gateway Pent III, 700mhz, with a Nvidia Riva TNT2 Ultra, MS 98Se. I have checked for virus, and updated drivers and rebooted many times using various combinations.

Problem: Color is set at 16, trying to change to 256. 640X480. I have tried to change advance settings also but again unsuccessful. I have clicked on apply and ok... system reboots and settings return to 16 --- 640x480.

Any suggestion would be greatly appreciated.

Has to be a driver issue:
Boot to safe mode and remove all the video drivers (you may discover there are duplicates) and then reboot and reinstall the nVidia drivers.

sounds good, that is one of the things I haven't done.... going to safe mode and deleting files.... I will try as soon as I get a chance and let you know the results.
