display/color problem

i held down the shift key on restart of win 98+, all
background (wallpaper, aol graphics etc) look like negative images - i tried changing display ,settings, color to 256 but it won't go, it stays at 16 . what have i done?
 
Hi,

Sounds as though you have the wrong Video Driver installed.

Go to display properties, select the settings tab, click on the advanced button, and check it is still using the correct driver, if not install the correct one. By clicking on the change button and pointing the computer to either search in the cab files c:\windows\options\cabs. Or on the video card install CD.
