I'm getting way out of my depth here, I know access fairly well and do a lot with VBA, but I don't know anything about programming or databases beyond access.

We currently have several reports that get printed to PDF, then published to our intranet every one to two days. I would like to automate this somehow to reduce labor and reduce time between updates. Basically, I want the reports generated on the fly when an intranet page is viewed.

So, fundamentally speaking, what types of options are available?

Data access pages? I don't know how these work.
SQL back end with some other type of reporting software?

I use classic ASP with SQL Server backend. You could also leave your data in Access but I prefer SQL Server since it allows more connetions and is more efficient. You could use SQL Server Express which is free. You don't have to purhase anything extra to run ASP pages.

There are lots of great resources such as WebMonkey.

I would prefer to leave the back end in access. We have 60 employees and I estimate a peak of less than ten concurrent users.

I don't know anything about web development (client side vs server side coding is something I'm only vaguely aware of), but the sys admin is implementing mediawiki right now which may or may not have tools I could use. I know it required PHP and MySQL to be installed on our server, but that's about it.

I'm doing some general research now, and found this about connecting to access with PHP.

Again, just looking for conceptual information as a starting point. Thanks.

If you do any coding in Access (VBA) you might want to take a look at ASP or ASP.NET. SQL Server Reporting Services are very flexible and powerfull for delivering reports through a web interface.
