Hello,

Have any of you guys created a soft partition using disk suite?

What I want to do is to create a soft partition using slice7 on c0t0d0 and for doing this I wish to use /etc/lvm/md.tab for setting this up.

Once this has been setup I believe I can then create more meta-devices off this soft partition, is this correct?

Cheers

Nick

Hi Nick. I've never used soft partitions, but if you do a keyword search for 'soft partition' in this forum, you might find the info that you need. Reading a few of them I think you can create meta-devices using this feature.

All I ask of you
Is make my wildest dreams come true

Nick, this is correct, you can use any slice on any disk, if you wish to use c0t0d0s7, that would be ok. you can use md.tab to configure metadevices or the command with full paramaters. If you use md.tab you can add some remarks/documentation as well.

hello,

these are the entries that i have put into /etc/lvm/md.tab:-

# soft partition setup
d5 1 1 /dev/dsk/c0t0d0s7
# /billing01 soft partition
d6 -p d5 10g
# /appl soft partition
d7 -p d5 4g
# /data soft partition
d8 -p d5 4g
# /CMMdb soft partition
d9 -p d5 2g
# /software soft partition
d10 -p d5 41g

does this look correct?

no, afaik (and the link above says) softpartitions are installed this way (not on the metadevice but on the physical device):

# metainit d20 -p c1t3d0s2 4g

hello,

I actually created these before i read your response, everything seems to be working as it is as the moment. Would you recommend that i remove these soft partitions and then create them as per your previous post?

cheers

nick

You can create a soft partition on top of a volume (mirror, stripe...etc) or on top of a slice/disc.

The commands you've used are for building on top of a volume...are u mirroring your drives or striping them ? If not you should use the command dafranze suggested.

If you want to use a disk for soft partitions without mirroring or striping it then -

metainit d1 -p -e c1t2d0 1G

(this formats the disc and creates 2 slices, one slice (0)occupying almost the entire drive and a small slice for a metadb, it also creates a soft partition of 1 GB)

metainit d2 -p c1t2d0s0 10G

(this would create a second soft partition of 10 GB on the same drive)

newfs /dev/md/dsk/d1
newfs /dev/md/dsk/d2

and so on

Hello,

what i have is a SparcBook which only has one disk available with one slice left ( c0t0d0s7 ). So i have gone into format and allocated the unused space on that disk to that slice and from this i need to create 5 seperate file systems. So to do this correctly all i do is the following:-

metainit d1 -p c0t0d0s7 4g
metainit d2 -p c0t0d0s7 4g

then just run a news on the newfs on them?

Yes that's right and don't forget that you also need to create state databases...usually one slice (4MB) is used for that.

hello,

i had already created this when i first configured this server to run disksuite:-

metadb -i
flags first blk block count
a m p luo 16 8192 /dev/dsk/c0t0d0s6
a p luo 8208 8192 /dev/dsk/c0t0d0s6
a p luo 16400 8192 /dev/dsk/c0t0d0s6

this lot should do the job?

4 MB is too small for the SDR. I would suggest 100 MB. Or if you feel that is too big, then 50 MB.

the default size of one replica of the statedb is exactly 4 MB. since there is a majority consensus algorithm which says you need at least half + 1 statedb it es recommended to create more than one statedb on each disk. I usually create 3 per disk (internal drives, _no_ FCAL/SAN etc!) therefore I set the slice's size to ~15 MB. a statedb can be stored within a metadevice (not in the metadevice for /, /var and swap but any other)
more info: refere to the link posted above. chapter 6 is about statedbs

I normally used a dedicated partition for the statedb. Have any of you tried storing the statedb on a slice used for a file system and are there any issues in doing this ?

no, I never used this feature

I too use a dedicated slice from a disk for the statedb!

Never tried it on a file system.
