I was defragging my C drive with Diskkeeper Software, went out for awhile, came back to find the hard drive light on, blank screen. Rebooted and a message came up unknown format, replaced the hard drive and was able to read the D partition of the bad drive and recover those files PTL! Has anyone had this problem with Diskkeeper? The Drive was a Maxtor 40 gig, about 2 years old. Thanks for any responce, popi

It could be that the drive was on it's way to failiure, and that using Defrag (which uses intensive Hard Drive swapping) just over-done it and caused it to fail. Not sure though, never heard of it before...

This thread mentions some problems running Diskeeper with Norton and ChkDsk.

chkdsk wont run ...

Have you had any success with this? I just installed diskkeeper on a less than 2 week old *fresh* install on win xp pro --

It appears to have corrupted one partition of my data drive. (a WD jb 200 gig ATA -- 2 partitions).

The drive is less than a year old and was working FINE until diskkeeper.

Now I get a cannot open file because it appears to be corrupt" message when trying to open PDFs and Indesign files ... my thumbnails of jpgs and tiffs are also gone, alone with previews.

When i tried to delete one of the folders "just to see", I got a "the recycle bin appears to be corrupt. would you like ot delete it?" message.

any ideas or places to point me for HELPPPP!!??

Most of hte drive was backed up -- but, of course, not the files within the last week and SURE ENOUGH, I need those and can't get them!!

thanks,

deb

ps -- checked for viruses, all looks clean there.

Try running ChkDsk to check your drive for errors. Right click your Drive icon/ Properties/ Tools/ Error Checking.

297760 - Error Message: The Recycle Bin on C:\ Is Corrupt or Invalid. Do You Want to Empty the Recycle Bin for this...

The Recycled folder itself can become damaged. Files are moved to the folder and the Recycle Bin on the desktop appears full but you cannot view the contents and the Empty The Recycle Bin command may be unavailable, or simply doesn't work.

Deleting the Recycle Bin and then restarting Windows, which will re-create and restore its functionality. Restart the computer and delete the recycle bin by pressing F8 at the WinXP Startup menu, and then select Safe Mode with Command Prompt. Navigate to the correct drive prompt (ie C or D). Type the following commands, pressing Enter after each line:

attrib -s -h recycler
del recycler
