My friend has a Win98SE Gateway Select PC with an AMD 650 processor, 384 MB ram a DVD & a burner. Because we had 2 digital cameras to D/L from, we got a Lexar Media USB 2.0 card reader and a Belkin USB 2.0 PCI card. After installing the PCI card, we connected the card reader & D/L pictures from both xD & Smartmedia cards. Everything seemed ok & we left the defrag running after disabling the task scheduler, the Norton AV & the Black Ice firewall. Several hours later we returned to find the defrag had stopped after 30% had been reorganized along with an error message stating that the disk could not be accessed for the defrag procedure. Then a BSOD appeared with the message "Disk write error - Cannot write to disk in drive C:. I shut down & rebooted & Scandisk appeared with the request to do a hard drive scan to check for errors. Ahter doing this, the BSOD comes up as soon as Windows starts & now Scandisk will not complete. Any suggestions? Could this be caused by the USB 2.0 PCI card or by the Reader? I really hate to think this is a hard drive failure. B-)
