My laptop is running really really slow esp when booting up. I've done the defrag thing, got rid of all the temp files etc.

I've run MS Bootvis and looking at the results it appears that 'Disk write Cashe' has been disabled.

Anyone any ideas as to what I can do other than reconfiguring the machine from scratch?

Thanks

Write cachine is enabled by default on all drives by XP. However, it really has meaning only in a SCSI context, not IDE. (Note: this is different than any RAM the drive itself may have). Check the System properties sheet for your drive; I suspect you will see the 'Policies' sheet is greyed out, although Write cachine is checked.

The Bootvis error message is a bug in the program. Bootvis has a lot of problems, and is no longer distributed or recommended by Microsoft.

A closer look at your Bootvis results will point in other directions for the slow boot. Often waiting for a DHCP obtained address by your Network adapter is the slowest part of the process you can control.
