Hi All,

I get the following two (2) entries in my event log.

The driver disabled the write cache on device \Device\Harddisk0\DR0.

Disk write caching on drive d: has been disabled to prevent possible data loss during system failures.

I have a two quesitons:

1) Is this affecting system performance?
2) If so, how do I fix it?

Thanks in advance for any help.

Aloha,

James

Are your hard drives SCSI or IDE? I had this same problem. It was explained to my that when an older drive is used in a newer system, since the drive is not as fast, the system shuts off drive caching. I have only seen this with IDE when a non-ATA66 drive was used in an ATA 66 controller, although I don't know if that was the real reason. In a system with a ATA66 drive, there was no error message. I have not seen this problem with SCSI drives. As far as perfromance, I would guess that it does hurt performance, but Windows seems more worried about stability and 'safety' than performance.

If i remember right, W2K will disable write Cache if the Active Directory Data is stored on that drive ( you wouldn´t like your AD Files become corrupted because of a system crash )
Of course this has an impact on system Performance.
It is possible to reenable the write cache if you select the harddisk in the device manager. On one of the property pages you will find the "Write Cache Enabled" checkbox.
