I got a hard drive I suspect of going south. It doesn't report anything on scandisk but I would like to do a more thorough disk check. Anyone know of any generic (preferrably FREE) disk utility download that test different makes that works good?

Thanks

In this case, I would simply go the manufacturer of your hard drive's website and download their diagnostic program.

Hitachi's diagnostic doesn't really give you much information. For instance it only reports "SMART data" as either good - or bad! But as it's free!

Spinrite not only provides lots of detail, like how many correctable and non correctable errors your drive has ever had, it tries very hard to retrieve data from bad sectors.
