In aix one can find free partitions by using the command
#lsvg <volume_group_name>
The out put shows the fre pps in a particular vg
The lspv command shows the lists of disks and pvid (physical volume identifier)...both free and engaged ones
I don't know about HP-UX. I am aix system admin.
