Disk Read Error - Definition Needed

I've noticed that on the data collection report on one of my servers, one of the 3 disks within a RAID5 array is showing 7 read errors.

However, I'm unsure what it means by read error. Is this specifically referring to hardware errors on the disk, or could it have been caused by a bottleneck at the disk controller, or insufficient buffer resources, etc ?
